1. If i have to evaluate my english speaking skill, i would say that is in an intermediate level, because i’m able to elaborate and express simple ideas in small talking, to speak about common activities and daily routines; but, it is limited when I have to take part on conversations about more complex topics, because I’m used to think in Spanish, and the process of mental translating of ideas becomes difficult when you don’t have the proper vocabulary. Also I have pronunciation problems with these words that i don’t use often.
However, I’m very confident with my speaking skills because I know that the practice is the only way to learn, and if you are afraid of speaking in every context you can, you’ll never improve your speaking skill.
2.
a) I listen a lot of English, in movies and in music
b) I try to read English texts when it is possible, electronic texts mainly.
c) I try to speak with my classmates and friends when it is possible, I have a couple of native English speakers, so I try to talk a lot with them.
3 .
-Movies and Music
-Electronic Papers and Articles.
-Friends and relatives.
4. To plan a speaking class as a teacher, I think that first you have to look out for a topic in wich your students might be interested, every group is different so there are different possible interests; and that discovering comes only with a closer relationship with the students.
Having the topic you have to generate a class process in which you put the rules for the class, after doing that, you ask students for their opinion or experiences about the topic, being always careful with the monopolization of speech.
Finally you have to make a concluding statement in which you get students the feedback of they development through the class activity.
5. It is used to provoke students, and to give them the context in which the speaking activities will be developed, the audiovisual material gives you the opportunity to put people virtually in other places and imaginary situations easily.
6 . The speaking activities must be relatively short because the teacher feedback and corrections should be closer because they are not very useful if they are given too much time later.
7. I think The best way to correct speaking mistakes is to listen to somebody that speaks good, because when you listen, try to understand and response in a conversation you are switching on the brain adaptation processes that are the natural way to learn a new language.
We have a lot of examples of people that go abroad to English speaking countries and improve a lot their speaking skills, and that is because the natural and social human need of communication forces them to get adapted to the language context in which they are.

ReplyDelete1. I consider my speaking skills quite good, it is something I love to do, but obviously I have some flaws I need to correct, some grammar mistakes sometimes, but in general I think it’s quite good.
2. Listening to a lot of english – practicing pronunciation – speaking practice – (actually what I’ve been doing is very similar to the “shadowing” described in the video)
3. what I do is that I listen to interviews of artists (usually Ellen’s show) and pay attention to everything they say, sometimes I watch (and listen to) the video several times and then I repeat the interview playing one of the “characters” and answering the questions. I also read a lot and try to think everything in english as often as I can.
4. I would use several elements for a speaking class, like audio, videos, activities etc. The important thing is that whatever we do, it must be interesting for the students and also provide a climate of confidence so they can actually start speaking and developing their skills.
5. I think it has to be a video that is interesting according to the age of the students, something funny maybe so they can find it alluring to work with. Also, it can’t be too long because the students could get bored. Also, I think, it is important to consider the accent of the speakers in the video, because depending on the level of the students, they might not understand a scottish accent for example or a foreign accent speaking in english.
6. About the duration, I think it will depend on the topic and the level of difficulty that we put in the assingment. Because we can’t demand the same from a sudent in a basic level and a student in an advanced level. So I think it could be from 15 minutes to half an hour.
7. I think the best way to correct mistakes is after the student finished what he or she was saying, because when we interrupt in the middle of a phrase, the person forgets sometimes what he/she was saying and also, they become increasingly shy. Besides, I don’t think it’s good to just correct the mistake by telling the student about it, we should also provide a way to help that studen fix the mistake so he/she won’t make it again.

ReplyDelete1. How would you evaluate your speaking skill? Are you confident with it?
Tryin to talk in class as much as I can, so the teacher corrects my mistakes. Usually when you hear your self talking in another lenguage at loud you can work on your pronunciation as well. I feel very confident speaking in english, since I have loved english since I was very small and try to practice it every chanche I get.
2. Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYS5RgeI6hI or http://www.elementalenglish.com/ten-steps-improve-english-pronunciation-language-skills/. Comment and name 3 techniques you use to improve your speaking
To hear music and english and imitate the sounds
to speak in english every chance I get, specially with foreign people
Look for a word that I don’t know in the dictionary in the exact same moment I hear it, this helps to not forgeting it.
3. What are the main resources you use to do that?
Dictionary usually on line, music, and the computer.
4. What elements are to consider to plan a speaking class?
Review the topics you are going to see in the class, having an order and organization helps to give a well structured class.
5. How is video used in a speaking class?
showing a short video about something interesting during the class that is spoken in english, helps to motivate the students, changin the rutine in class a little bit.
6. How long should speaking activities be?
as long as needed, but not too extence or it they might become tedious and borings, loosing interest in them.
7. What is the best way to correct speaking mistakes? Provide examples.
Reviewing them one by one, looking for the correct pornunciation of the word, to check the phonetic symbols helps a great deal.

ReplyDelete1. How would you evaluate your speaking skill? Are you confident with it?
Well, sometimes I feel confident about my speaking skill but sometimes I don’t maybe it is because I don’t practice at home as I should be.
So, to improve my speaking skills I try to participate in class, when the teacher is doing some activities that requires talking in class.
2. Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYS5RgeI6hI or http://www.elementalenglish.com/ten-steps-improve-english-pronunciation-language-skills/. Comment and name 3 techniques you use to improve your speaking.
1. I try to practice with a friend some dialogues
2. I watch a lot of movies without the subtitles and I repeat the movie over and over until I know what the characters will say before they do in it.
3. Sometimes I recorder myself when I practice some dialogues to listen my pronunciation.
3. What are the main resources you use to do that?
I Use the TV, A tape recorder and my favorite’s movies
4. What elements are to consider planning a speaking class?
The English`s level of the student
The Activities I going to present to the students
The Techniques I going to applied
5. How is video used in a speaking class?
The video can be used as a powerful source, for example to watch a movie, or some music videos during the class and make the class participate with comment about the movie or the music video.
6. How long should speaking activities be?
I think the speaking activities should be around 2 hours.
7. What is the best way to correct speaking mistakes? Provide examples.
One of the best techniques to correct our speaking mistake it is maybe to recorder what are we are saying in English and then listen the recorder to notice what our mistakes are.
1. In my opinion I think that my level of English is quite good. I feel I can improve a lot but I have a lot of basic grammar mistakes that difficult my fluency. When I am in an oral test I get nervous so lose my confident but in general when I have to speak with strange people I am more confident.
ReplyDelete2. I listen to a lot of music mostly in English because I try translating the meaning of the lyrics and that helps a lot with the addition of new vocabulary. Also I watch a lot of TV series like How I Met Your Mother putting attention to new words or useful expressions. The other technique that I use is reading a book every time I can.
3. I use Youtube, Movies, TV series, Music, books, word reference and dictionaries.
4. Well I think that is very important finding material that your class may like (Something that keeps their attention), activities that encourage them to speak fluency for example a debate.
5. Teachers usually use videos that have to be related with the subject or theme of the class for example if we are talking about music a good video could be a musical documentary.
6. Personally speaking I believe if you can talk the whole class is really helpful for improving speaking skills. But also think that is very important that you should do different activities because if you do the same activity the whole class your students will get bored.
7. The best way to correct mistakes is talking to yourself loud; if you do it you will create a habit of correct your own mistakes. For example try to make comments about something that you are watching at the TV and put attention to your own mistakes.

Based on the speaking activities performed in class, answer the following questions:
1. How would you evaluate your speaking skill? Are you confident with it?
I think the activities we´ve done in classes have been very useful to improve our speaking. Personally, I really enjoy these classes because it is an space where we just speak English for almost two hours and this is great because we don´t have the opportunity to speak and practice this language in our normal days, and here we can talk to our classmates as much as we want to, doing different kinds of activities, all of them very amusing. Now, I feel more confident when I have to speak English, I´ve improved my fluency and my pronunciation a lot.
2. Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYS5RgeI6hI or http://www.elementalenglish.com/ten-steps-improve-english-pronunciation-language-skills/. Comment and name 3 techniques you use to improve your speaking.
I always listen to music in English or I prefer to watch a movie in English and not in Spanish and I repeat what they say, specially when I hear words which are difficult to pronunciate.
I love reading novels in English, in that way I´ve improved my vocabulary and If I´m not sure about its pronunciation I look up the phonetic and I repeat the word.
I always talk in English with some of my classmates and my daughter because she can understand some things. So it´s good for me and good for her. I also talk with people from other countries.
3. What are the main resources you use to do that?
I´m in Open English course and I´ve learnt a lot from it, specially when I go to live session and I can speak with native teachers and students from different parts of the world.
4. What elements are to consider to plan a speaking class?
To plan a speaking class we have to focus on our students tates, what they like or enjoy. For example, if they like an English singer or band, we should teach this language with the songs of these artists.
Let´s make them talk about their hobbies, their life, their family, etc. They will want to speak all the time and in that way they will improve their fluency.
5. How is video used in a speaking class?
Videos are very useful if they contain interesting and good material for the children. Kids are able to watch something they like and at the same time they will be learning English without realizing about it.
6. How long should speaking activities be?
I think speaking activities should be present in every class. This is the main manner to communicate each other so it´s a good opportunity to make children speak about the contents of the class and about their own things, in that way the activities will be fun for them. They have to feel free to speak as much as they want.
7. What is the best way to correct speaking mistakes? Provide examples
The best way to correct mistakes is not to make feel the children embarrassed , they have to know that everyone makes mistakes when we are learning a new language and we must take it naturally. Teachers don´t have to say to children “don´t say that, you are wrong”, in that way the kids won´t speak anymore.
For example, if a child is speaking and he makes a mistake the teacher must repeat what the kid said but in the right way and write it on the blackboard. He doesn´t have to say the kid that he was wrong, just repeat the sentence correctly and teach it in a good manner.
1. How would you evaluate your speaking skill? Are you confident with it?
ReplyDeleteI think that I need to improve my English; I mean that is necessary to keep learning in every way possible a new language, as vocabulary, grammar rules, etc. And feel confident about it, I believe that be confident with yourself is the key when you are learning a new language, fearless of making any mistakes, and I think that I’m not confident enough to speak freely about any topic, that’s why I need to practice my speaking and fluency much much more
2. Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYS5RgeI6hI or http://www.elementalenglish.com/ten-steps-improve-english-pronunciation-language-skills/. Comment and name 3 techniques you use to improve your speaking.
I think that these links give really good advices about improving our speaking and fluency. I usually try to write down the mistakes, when I’m watching a movie I repeat and practice out loud some words and write down if I have any question about some grammar rules.
3. What are the main resources you use to do that?
I usually listen to a lot of English music that help me with my listening and you can easily do it in your way to work, university or at home, well at any time.
I love to watch series and movies I am a huge fan!! and I believe that these sources helped me since I was in High school to learn English in a very enjoyable way.
4. What elements are to consider to plan a speaking class?
-Movies
-Music with lyrics
- Data/pendrive/computer/
- Work sheets
-Power points
5. How is video used in a speaking class?
As we saw in classes I think that work in pairs and use reported speech for example is a good idea, tell a story from a movie, role play, dialogs etc.
6. How long should speaking activities be?
-20 minutes
7. What is the best way to correct speaking mistakes? Provide examples
If the mistake is like “important” I think that you can correct immediately obviously in a very good way and as kind as you can, or if there are a lot of mistakes you can make a list a give it to the students and explain it to them, in this way the students won’t feel uncomfortable.

Based on the speaking activities performed in class, answer the following questions:
1. I think I’m not feeling confident with my speaking today, I need a lot of practice to improve it, I know that I can speak better but I think that I’m in an intermediate level, is not so bad but it can be better. I have problems with grammar, I have a lot of mistakes and also I have problems with listening but I think it is because I’m not concentrated all the time in the things that I’m doing.
2. Listening a lot of English (when you can do it), in songs, videos or TV. Practice the pronunciation, several times, be confident when you are talking, and if you are not sure, repeat it again and again. Read an article and take some notes of word that you don’t know the meaning or you are not sure.
3. Internet is full of information; I can watch a video, listening songs, reading some news, and even chat with my friends and relatives.
4. I think to plan a class as a teacher you have to be a funny person. Today I think teaching a new idiom is very difficult, because kids and teenagers are not interested. So I believe that an important element Is to be a creative and funny person, to catch the attention of your students and motivated them to learn an idiom.
5. You can use a video to help your student to be confident while they are speaking. The video it has to contain imaginary situations where they can talk about it and share with their classmates.
6. I think the duration of the speaking activity it will depend of the topic of the class because all the topics are different and also have a different level of difficulty; there is not a specific time, because it is not the same talking about private life than talking about a research article. You have to give time and “space” for students can talk without feel that they are under pressure.
7. You can record your voice and listen with somebody who really knows a lot of English, could be a friend, relative, classmate or teacher, anyone who makes you feel confident and secure.

ReplyDeleteBased on the speaking activities performed in class, answer the following questions:
1. How would you evaluate your speaking skill? Are you confident with it?
I think my speaking skills are ok but I know it can be better. Sometimes I get too nervous and it’s hard for me to control it that’s when I make mistakes but I’m trying to fix it.
2. Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYS5RgeI6hI or http://www.elementalenglish.com/ten-steps-improve-english-pronunciation-language-skills/. Comment and name 3 techniques you use to improve your speaking.
The techniques I use the most to improve my speaking are:
Talk to yourself out loud at home. I think this is a good way to get used to speak English, is also a good idea read books or magazines out loud (I read the books I have to read for the classes out loud), this technique is the one that I use the most is a bit embarrassing when someone is around but most of the time I’m all by myself at home.
Train your Ears. Watching TV shows with no subtitles is a good way of training your ears and it’s also a good way of getting new vocabulary. Also I like listening to the radio and I got used to listening American or British radio stations.
4. Repetitive Practice: sometimes it’s hard for me to remember new vocabulary and I have to repeat it over and over again, and it works (at least for me)
3. What are the main resources you use to do that?
The main resources I use to do that are radio, TV, my laptop, books, etc I use whatever I think can be useful
4. What elements are to consider to plan a speaking class?
The elements you need to consider are the number of students you have on the classroom, the time you count with, and of course the characteristics of the students.
5. How is video used in a speaking class?
It can be use as an introduction to generate conversation about a topic.
6. How long should speaking activities be?
I’m not really sure of how long speaking activities should be, but for example when I was in Vise I had to do a speaking activity with the kids and it took us most of the class.
7. What is the best way to correct speaking mistakes? Provide examples.
I think the best way to correct speaking mistakes is not telling someone that’s wrong because it can be embarrassing for the person that made the mistake and he/she might not want to talk again. I think is better to talk in general said something like: I heard someone said something that is not correct…

4.-To plan a speaking class is necessary to consider some elements: to use active student engagement strategies such as role play, discussion, storytelling, etc.; to move around the classroom; to give specific compliments for well done work; to ask questions to students; to know and be aware of the different levels of speaking proficiency that each student has.
5.-Video is used in a speaking class to get class’s attention beyond sounds there are images, so students can retain better the content of the unit. Moreover, using videos classes are more interesting and interactive.
6.- Speaking activities should be during all classes; for example within the class is about reading, the teacher and the students can interact speaking all the time in English about the topic, predict the main idea of the reading, etc. the same could happen with the others skills.
7.-The best way to correct speaking mistakes is to be aware of the errors that one has made. For example: to correct the pronunciation repeating it aloud several times.

Myself, I take care of it watching some TV prog. carefully choosen (content, vocabulary and culture), I prefer Health and science shows, some sitcoms and movies as well. First of all, teachers must be respectful and choose the best momento to correct. Being inopportune can cause aversión and destroy teacher-student relationship.
Most of the time, I wait the to finish reding or speaking and they I rephrase the sentence with the correction made and enphazising the mistake.
I also choose the words that give problems, and créate an activity to reinforce the problematic words

How I evaluate my speaking skill, well I would say I’m in a intermediate level I know I can do and give more in every speaking activity if I practice more, sometimes I'm a little nervous at the time to speak for fear of making mistakes. I’m not too much confident with it, but I know can be better if I practice more.

The techniques I use to improve my speaking are:
- I write little pieces of papers with all the new words I heard in class, in a movie , in songs or I found in a book and I put it in one of the walls of my room. I usually write the words and the meanings that’s helps me a lot to learn and remember new vocabulary.
- I try to watch movies without subtitles and tried to repeat the words they say to improve my pronunciation.
- Most of the time I heard music in English and I tried to analyze what the song says.

If you want to plan a speaking class you have to consider the level of the group you are going to work with, you have to create a lot of funny activities to catch the attention of your students and at the same time that could help them to be more confident to talk and to make them improve their speaking skills.

I think that the teacher decides how long the speaking activities should be during, but he always have to consider the level of the group he’s going to work with.
7.- What is the best way to correct speaking mistakes? Provide examples.
Giving a feedback at the end of the class, it is not necessary to say the name of the student who was wrong, you have to correct all the mistakes that you listened but always in general in such a way that the student who made the mistake not feel embarrassed and avoid speaking in the upcoming classes.
